Game Review (written by Theblackyak) Added on: 6 Aug 2011
Asteroids Deluxe was actually released for the Atari ST in the late eighties, but became an after thought for the Atari 7800, seeing a release for that particular home video gaming console in 2007. It is very similar to the original coin operated conversion game of Asteroids…also popular on the early Atari home gaming systems…but it offers the gamer a lot more whistles and bells.
The first change is from vector graphics to bitmap imagery. There are also a couple of variations in game play, but otherwise, Asteroids Deluxe is pretty much just a better looking version of the original Asteroids. The game play and ideas are still the same.
You fly a small triangular ship through an Asteroids field and shoot at them as they float by. Each time you shoot a rock, it splinters into smaller rocks, and so it continues until the asteroid is completely destroyed. Of course, if one should hit you, you will be destroyed. There is a flying saucer that sometimes cruises through the asteroid belt, flinging missiles and making your task even more difficult. Asteroids is a classic arcade play and this deluxe version only served to make a good thing better. You can’t go wrong with classics like this.
