The Sega Master System
Created to compete with the Famicom and inevitably the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega’s Master System is a redesigned version of the SG-1000 series. It was released to North America in 1986 with hopes of tapping into a market that was totally dominated, by that time, by the NES. To say that it did not have the impact that Sega had envisioned would be a gross understatement. It initially sold for US$200 and in its first four months it sold 125,000 units. That does not sound so shabby for a debut home video gaming console, until it is compared with Nintendo’s success. In the same amount of time, Nintendo sold two million of its Nintendo Entertainment System consoles.

To improve its sales, Sega attacked the market by hiring Tonka Toys to promote the console and Master System games. It was a move that was not well thought out. Tonka had no previous experience with the console market and didn’t know how to maintain current sales, much less exceed them.

It wasn’t until after the Sega Genesis was established that the parent company regained the marketing rights from Tonka and released the Sega Master System II. This was a smaller, more stripped down version that came with a smaller production cost and ensuing retail price. It was “missing” several standard features, such as the reset button, power light and expansion port. The revival of the Master System, however, was not meant to be and the machine still failed. In the course of its life, only 13 million Master System units.

Even with its short life span, over three hundred Master System games were created and sold. Many of them are available now as Master System Roms, and occasionally a homebrew or indie game pops up for this now defunct home gaming console.
