I do not think that there is any game that reminds me of my childhood like Super Mario Bros - the classic game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Though the graphics are extremely low for today’s standards, the gameplay is smooth, easy to learn and understand. The levels truly test your hand eye coordination with just two buttons and a D-pad. If you have not tried this one yet for some reason I definitely suggest you do so.
The story is pretty simple and if you know any of the games in the series I am sure that you have heard it before. Take Mario, and maybe a friend can take Luigi, through eight worlds with four levels each to kill Bowser and rescue the Princess. Chase down Bowser and fight him at the end of each world as he keeps running away with the Princess. Finally you and he will have the final showdown, at least for now, on the eighth world.
Other than simply beating Bowser and saving the Princess you can also hunt for some secrets. There are tubes hidden in certain levels that can help you skip some of the content (but I definitely suggest experiencing it all), hidden coins, and even a trick to pick up a ton of extra lives if you are having trouble with the last level (hint look for a turtle that you can jump on for a really long time).
I like most of the games in this series but without a doubt this is my favorite, though a few others are tied for a very close second. That fact probably has to do mostly with the sentimental value as I can still remember when we first got the system and this game. My friends and I spent many a summer playing this game and the Nintendo still dripping from the pool. That statement surely dates me but I am sure there are many more that would say the same. For all of us that played this game as a kid it holds a special place in our gaming hearts.
Although the gameplay is easy to pick up it is most definitely not that easy to beat. Experienced gamers may find not find this game too difficult but it will pose a fun challenge for most of us. The only real drawback is that once you beat it and find the few secrets the game is pretty repetitive. Even so I highly suggest playing it if for some reason you haven’t before and it’s a must if you have and you want to bring back some good memories.
