When it comes to racing games, it seems as though karting is just as popular (more so, really) than more mainstream NASCAR or traditional open wheel games. Why? Who knows. Karting is a real life sport that people of all ages participate in. Maybe it transfers to the gaming community. At any rate, Super Mario Kart was an awesome addition to the karting game stable.
This 1992 Super Nintendo release featured a collection of everyone’s favorite Super Mario characters, including Yoshi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and of course the Mario Brothers themselves, Mario and Luigi. All are vying for the Super Mario Kart championship.
This was the first real karting game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, making it a contribution to gaming history even if it wasn’t a really fun game. It takes a bit of inspiration from the actual Mario games in that collecting the classic coins (just like those in the platform games) gives your kart a speed boost. You can pick up shells and bananas to thwart your opponents.
